Thoughts on the Hackathon

The Hackathon that took place from 27th of July to 29th of July was an interesting experience to say the least. You might not expect someone from the medical field to collaborate in something of this sort but I feel like I have gained valuable knowledge into the laboratory side of medical affairs. This is mostly due to the topic of the hackathon being about programming de novo assembly in Python. It might seem not that important to physicians but in recent years there has been an increase in doctors being expected to be at least a little familiar with most other major branches, in order to sufficiently cope with unfamiliar situations that we may face. On another note I gained valuable experience about working with others in a group to achieve the same goal. Again comparing this to the medical field we are expected to work as a tightly knit unit to solve the problems of our patients with help coming from our seniors, colleagues, and from outside our field. If I could find a negative needle among the positive haystack I would have to say that the hackathon was demanding in terms of sleep deprivation. But then again doctors are expected to remain functional under stressful conditions, so this was an excellent opportunity to hone my sleep walking skills. Not to mention that it wouldn’t be a complete hackathon without some sleepless moments. Till next time...
